Mar 23 | 7:30PM | Mother Figures: Biopolitics, Bare Life, and Fetal Citizenship

posted tuesday, 1:57pm by Central Michigan University Upcoming Events
Presented by Dr. Nicole Sparling -- Alfonso Cuaron, the Mexican director of the film "Children of Men," reveals the current preoccupations of a post-9/11 world through his deviations from the original novel by British writer P.D. James. In both the novel and the film, "Children of Men" is set in a world that is literally without a "conceivable future" because no births have been recorded in eighteen years. Amidst a society with an increasing "nostalgia for the future" as embodied in the fetus, the story narrates the plight of a young marginalized woman who has just discovered that she is pregnant. Although the film and the novel differ on the identity of this new Eve figure, Dr. Sparling argues that a comparison of the works of Cuaron and James reveals the biopolitical structure under which motherhood becomes incompatible with full citizenship and the undercurrent of eugenic thought that makes this possible.
